If you have ever been a part of a house fire you know that the damage can be significant and can be devastating to try and clean up after. There are many items in a house fire that are gone for good and no level of cleaning can get them back. That is not the same for other goods in your home and the home itself. The home can be repaired and restored after a house fire and put back to be a suitable place to live. Although the disaster is not fun to deal with, the hope that you can get a home back to pre-fire condition or even better is great. There are a few ways that you can prevent causing a fire in your home and Disaster Services offers lots of helpful tips below.
Keep Safe from Fire when Cooking in Kitchen
When you are in the kitchen and cooking a meal you are using gas and fire. The gas is what is hooked up to your appliances that are then lit by a pilot light. Even a small flame can catch fire if there is something nearby that is flammable. It is a great idea to never wear loose fitting clothes when cooking and always keep rags, dish towels and even wooden spoons away from the flame. Also be sure to turn off the gas and extinguish any flames that you are using.
Do Not Put a Candle Too Close to Curtains & Fabrics
If you are like many Americans then burning a candle can add a level of ambiance and a nice smell to a room. You need to be very careful when burning candles and be sure that you have it on a sturdy surface. You also want to make sure that it is not near any flammable materials like curtains and couches. Always blow the candle out of you are leaving the room.
Test Your Smoke Detectors
This is a great way to prevent a fire from getting out of hand and ensure that the people in the home have a chance to get out safely. Your smoke alarms should be tested on a monthly basis and you should have a family exit plan when anyone hears the alarm go off.
Check Power Cords & Electrical Outlets for Damage
If you have cords and outlets that are damaged or frayed they can start a fire. The electrical wires can get very hot and will ignite a flame if you are not careful. You can do a monthly check especially if you have pest such as cats or a puppy that are prone to chewing on cords. Replace any damaged cords and have the outlet replaced if you find damage.
