It places an excessive strain on the heating element as this sediment builds up, it creates a layer between the heating element and the water itself. This results in overheating that can compromise the integrity of the tank, eventually. Excessive Pressure. Generally, water heaters are designed to handle pressure. However, excess pressure within the tank can cause it to burst. If your water temperature is set too high, which is above 120-125 degrees, pressure problems can also occur.
Corrosion. Though highly durable, it does eventually rust as modern water heater tanks are constructed from steel. Most water heaters feature a sacrificial anode rod to combat this problem, which is designed to help protect the system from rust. Anode rods eventually break down, and the tank will begin to rust soon after. Your tank is probably rusting on the inside if your hot water comes out of the tap with a brown tint. This will lead to corrosion that can cause the water heater to fail or burst, eventually.
What to Do After Water Heater Bursts

1) Halt the Water Flow. Stopping the water from flowing. The water supply line that runs into the water heater needs to be located. Twist the valve clockwise to cut off the water supply. Turn off your home’s main water supply if you can’t find the valve.
2) Flip the Power Off. It creates a serious electrical hazard when there is a broken water heater can create a large pool of water. A fire could start when your water heater’s electric or gas heating element may continue to run after the tank fails. Find the breaker for the hot water tank in your main breaker box and turn it off. Shut off the gas supply line at the source if your hot water heater is gas-powered.
